The Beas enters near the Rohtnag Pass in Kulu at a height of 3,960 m and flows through a gorge from Larlji to Talwara and then enters the Punjab plains to meet the Sutlej at Harike. Its total length is 460 km and catchment area is 20,303 sq km.
Identification of Pollution Sources
In the second phase, Punjab Pollution Control Board identified the following sources of pollution in river Beas which are listed as under:
A) Industrial Sources
The following industries were found discharging their wastewater into river Beas:
- M/s Pioneer Industries (Gluten Division), A-3, A-4, Industrial Growth Centre, Tehsil Pathankot, Distt. Gurdaspur
The industry is a food processing unit and discharges 0.31 MLD of its wastewater into river Beas through Chakki river. The industry has installed an ETP based on physico-chemical followed by biological treatment system.
- M/s Pioneer Industries Ltd., (Distillery Division), A-3, A-4, Industrial Growth Centre, Tehsil Pathankot, Distt. Gurdaspur
The industry is a distillery unit with its product as potable alcohal, rectified spirit and ENA. The discharge of the industry is 0.475 MLD. It has installed an ETP to take care of spent wash. The quantity of spent wash is 0.392 MLD.
- M/s Indian Sucrose Ltd., G. T. Road, Mukerian, Distt. Hoshiarpur
The industry is a sugar mill with its cane crushing capacity as 2500 TCD. The quantity of trade effluent of the industry is 0.735 MLD, which is discharged into river Beas.
B) Domestic Sources
